Two years latter, at the same festival, he saw John McCutcheon play. He bought his first dulcimer that year. Cliff's background is in percussion. Since the age of fifteen, Cliff has played the drums in various groups including Rock, Blues, Jazz and folk ensembles. He started playing dulcimer in a bluegrass group in 1987. That group, named "Steel City Strings", played at the 1988 Bethlehem Musikfest. His current group, DayBreak has been together for more than a decade and a half.
